How to replace GE Motor WH20X10076 – 004

This is the 4th post in this series.  I’ve been taking apart a GE Hydrowave washing machine and showing you how to replace nearly every part.  Before I show you how to replace the motor, first lets talk about when to replace the motor.  The nice thing about the Hydrowave washer is that it has a self diagnosing feature.

Removing the front panel

First you need to access the motor.  To access the motor you have to remove the front panel using a putty knife.  When you can visually see the motor locate the blinking light on top of the motor.  The number of blinks will help you self diagnose the washing machine.  For a great tutorial on GE Hydrowave error codes and what the blinking lights mean click here or watch the video below.

GE Hydrowave Error Codes

The below video gives a great explanation on how to diagnose your GE Hydrowave.

Replacing the Motor

If you determine that your motor needs to be replaced, The following instructions will help you do to do that.

  • Make sure that your washing machine is unplug from the wall outlet.
  • Follow the steps outlined above to remove front panel on your GE washing machine.
  • Remove each plug from the motor by pressing in the plastic tabs on the plugs.

  • Next we will remove the zip tie that attaches the wire harness to the motor.  Using a pair of needle nose pliers you will need to squeeze together the two fins that hold the zip tie in place.  (See 2nd Pic below)

  • After you have the zip tie removed we next need to remove the belt.  The belt is quiet easy to remove, but a little bit harder to put back on.  🙂  To remove simply rotate the big pulley and push down on the belt, while rotating the pulley.  (You remove and put on the belt the same way you would remove or put on a bike chain.)

  • Now we need a 3/8 socket and ratchet.  Using a 3/8 ratcheting wrench is very helpful for the hard to reach spots.  After you remove the (4) 3/8 screws that hold the motor into place, tilt the motor back and then slide it out to remove it.

Once you have the motor remove, reverse the steps to install the motor.  Here are a few tips:

  • When mounting the motor, put the rear /nuts on first.  The big pulley in the back gets in the way, so you will need to set the motor in place then tilt the motor forward, place the rear nuts individually directly on the frame, slowly tilt the motor back into position and tighten the nut on slightly.  Do this for both of the rear nuts.  Once both of the rear nuts are in place, they will rest on the big pulley not allowing the motor to sit completely into place.  Tighten down the nuts the rest of the way until they are tight.  Now tighten down the two front nuts.
  • Like putting a bike chain on, you will need to first put the belt around the shaft on the motor, and then rotate the big pulley and push the belt up onto the pulley.  If you keep going, the belt will slip off the motor shaft.  To keep in into place place your hand directly under the motor shaft holding the belt on the shaft.  Turn the large pulley and pull the belt onto the large pulley at the same time.  It’s a bit difficult, but you can do it!
